Our famous long running weekend nature breaks throughout the year. Arrive Friday and attend a welcome meeting with your guide Bob Ford, then enjoy dinner in the bistro overlooking our magnificent views. Saturday and Sunday are spent out and about in the local area discovering the birds, flora and fauna. Sunday afternoon the weekend is summed up with a cream tea and discussion on the amazing sightings you have encountered on your weekend. Your weekend includes dinner, room, breakfast, packed lunches, guide and transport after you arrive at hotel.  Very popular breaks, early booking is recommended.  See us at the Rutland Bird Fair every year!

Painting Breaks or just have a go!

RESIDENT ARTIST  – Podi Lawrence—Artist/Illustrator/Teacher is available to book for personal tuition on a one to one basis during your stay at the hotel.  Or, why not arrange a break with friends where Podi can tailor make a painting break to suit your interest and requirements.

  • 90 minute lesson in drawing for 1-4 persons, including all materials £25 per person
  • Half day courses £40
  • Full day painting £65, watercolour, acrylic or oils.

Walking Breaks

Take a walking break anytime. The Isle of Portland is a great start point for walks round the Island or along the World Heritage Coast. You can take the Jurassic coast explorer bus from Weymouth along the coast in either direction then enjoy the coastal walk back to Portland. When you book a walking break we offer you a free local OS map and bottled water per day, with a packed lunch option.

Watersports

We can assist you in organising your watersports activities using local companies. Portland was the home of the 2012 Sailing Olympics an ideal place to learn to sail. Portland harbour is known for speed records for enthusiastic kite and windsurfers.  Paddleboard in the shallow harbour, or kayak into the Fleet lagoon.  All activities within 1.7miles of the hotel.

Cycling Break

Portland is a perfect location to cycle the Dorset coast from. At the heart of the World heritage Jurassic coast. We can organise bike hire and/or storage of your bikes whilst staying at the hotel. If hiring cycles we can arrange for you to be picked up each day to return to the hotel.

Diving Break

Portland is recognised as one of the best diving sites in all of Europe as it has a wealth of marine life, wrecks both shallow and deep, open water and harbour ensuring there is always somewhere to dive. Portland offers diving suitable for the beginner to professionals offering dives to 70 meters using trimix. Being at the heart of the Jurassic Coast divers can also experience some amazing rock formations that those who are land based only will never get to see. Learn more about Diving Breaks

Climbing Break

Portland is a well established all year round climbing venue. The experienced can even try deep water soloing, which involves climbing cliff faces above very deep water. Portland is a climbing venue of national importance. Nowhere else in the country offers such extensive sports climbing for all climbing abilities. Portland has over 800 routes recorded along its coastal sea cliffs .

Fishing Break

According to the experts Portland is considered to be the top spot for sea angling in Britain. Portland’s coves, rocky outcrops and Chesil Beach offer many opportunities to fish. This is confirmed by the number of national and international competitions that are regularly held here. There are many areas to fish around Portland.
