The Heights Hotel guide to flora and fauna of Portland
Whatever your passion, be it wild flowers, butterflies,
birds or wildlife in general there is something for everyone
in and around Portland.
Portland can boast of a unique butterfly, several rare
orchids, a healthy marine life and a naturalistic approach
to solving problems. Last year a herd of 10 primitive goats
were introduced to the undercliffs on the east side of the
island. This project was organised by John Stobart of
Natural England and Lyn Cooch the island ranger. Lyn
explained the idea behind the project:
"Historically
goats were a feature of many of the wilder pars of the
English landscape including Portland but now most have
disappeared. Without the grazing pressure from the goats
areas not farmed such as steep rocky cliffs become overgrown
with shrubs which prevent certain plants from growing and
have a knock-on effect on other wildlife especially insects.
The Portland goats have settled in well and their effect on
the vegetation can be seen in a number of areas. This should
allow a far greater diversity of flowers and ferns to grow
where there previously was just brambles."
Portland also has an active and diverse marine life. Recent
sightings, both from Portland Bill, include 2 bottlenose
dolphins and 2 pilot whales. Larger numbers have already
been seen this year with 30-40 dolphins spotted together at
the end of April. Seals are also visitors to the area.
Portland has a huge amount of bird visitors and we have
dedicated several pages to them
here.
Portland continues to work to encourage all sorts of
wildlife. There are dedicated butterfly reserves on the
island that have been further developed over the winter
months to encourage even more species to not only visit but
stay a while. Old quarries are also being redeveloped and
are being allowed to go back to nature with a small bit of
help from mankind only when it is needed. Independent Quarry
is being redeveloped currently including some wetland areas
to attract the scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly that have been
seen on the island in recent years.
Rare and unusual plants and flowers can also be seen
throughout the island and along its coastline. Pyramidal,
Spider and Bee orchids can be seen as well as some more
coastal species such as Rock Sea Lavender and Sea Holly.
