The Heights Isle Of Portland Hotel
Weymouth, the famous beach, harbour and kite festival

Weymouth

Weymouth has always been a popular place to visit and really came to the attention of the nation from the many visits of George III back in 1789. Of course, Weymouth has a varied history prior to this but it was probably more George III that made Weymouth the popular tourist destination it is today rather than knowing that back in 1348 Weymouth was the port the ship carrying the black plague arrived on!

Nowadays the area is famed for its beach, the pretty harbour and the large line up of events that take place throughout the year. The beach is an all sand affair and is an excellent place for young or old as the sands have no deep shelf to suddenly take you by surprise. The beach at Weymouth is the centre of many activities throughout the year including:

  • Beach Motorcross - attracting 250 of the nations top riders covering from 125cc to 500cc the beach becomes a challenging 1 mile course and holds 6 races
  • Held over the May bank holiday, the Beach Kite Festival attracts enthusiasts from all over the world
  • Beach Volleyball - a 3 day event and the highlight of British beach volleyball, the event is held in July and has become hugely popular in recent years
  • Summer fireworks events throughout August. Every Monday the seafront transforms itself to a place to listen to live music, mant seafront attractions and of course some amazing fireworks over Weymouth Bay.
  • Beach Live is a free 9 day festival of live music and performance that will showcase a wide range of music and talent. Each day has a strong focus on the local music scene with a different genre of music and entertainment to inspire and cater for many tastes; including Rock, Pop, Folk, Jazz, and Blues. Normally takes place in July.
  • Spirit of the sea - a unique festival taking place in July celebrating the areas maritime heritage and relationship with the sea in.
  • Weymouth Carnival - this has now become a 3 day event and in 2008 saw aeriel displays including the world famous Red Arrows, London Fire Brigade Parachute Team, Wing Walkers, The Blades and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire. In addition there was the grand firework display so expect more of the same in 2009.

Of course there is more to Weymouth than just all the activities. Weymouth has a range of shopping both in the town and across the harbour in Brewers Quay. There are several markets and farmers markets on throughout the year. The harbour is very picturesque and you can arrange to go angling on one of the many fishing boats that moor in the harbour. Weymouth is also the gateway to going further afield with Condor Ferries going to the Channel Islands and France daily.
